I downloaded this file and saved it to my desktop, then installed it.
(Download and install with antivirus disabled). Same story: I install the
update, OE won’t open, I uninstall it, OE opens. I think at this point I will
go unpatched. I have uninstalled Windows Update Notifier, so that won’t
bother me. Thanks anyway for your suggestions.

Move all DBX files from your identity's store to another Windows folder.

Follow Steps 2 thru 6.

OE should open now. Import the DBX files you moved above into OE.

Installing 837009 *should* not cause any problems now. If it does, post
back.

I tried this before, but I will try again. But could you explain what you
mean when you write "Follow steps 2 thru 6"?

I followed the instructions to the letter. As I said, I had tried before,
too. Still no joy.

Well, you've got me stumped.

The only thing else I can suggest would be to...

=> (1) backup your identity's store and (2) overinstall IE and OE:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

=> (1) backup your store, (2) uninstall IE and OE6 via Add/Remove Programs,
(3) reinstall Win98 (http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html),
then (4) (reinstall) IE/OE 6 SP1, reboot and (5) install any other updates.

I did all this, except reinstalling win98 -it really isn't worth it - and
still the same behaviour. I'm giving up with it now. Thanks for your help.
Over & out.

Gets you like that sometimes Robert :-)

OE & IE are linked in many ways.

So try this to repair IE, click

Start > Run

then enter exactly (case/space-sensitive) Or copy/paste

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance

this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE and see if
this helps?
