I have 3 computers, 2 running Windows 2000 Server, 1 running Windows 2000
Professional They have all the latest updates, except one update just won't install on any of the computers. This is the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express (KB823353) I've tried installing it with Microsoft Update. I've gone to the webpage (below) and tried to manually install the update. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-018.mspx But no luck. When I use Microsoft Update, it says it's complete, then reboots the computer, but when the computer comes up again it says that it still needs to install the update. When I try to do the manual install, I tried the 6.0 update and it says that I must have Windows XP installed (I have Windows 2000 on all 3 computers). When I try the 6.0 SP1 update, it says I need to have Outlook Express 6.0 SP1 installed. My Outlook Express version is: 6.00.2800.1123 How can I install this required update (KB823353)? All 3 computers have this same problem. |

A few things.
The article that you reference says that for Windows 2000, you must have SP2, SP3 or SP4 installed. What level is your Windows at? You mention that you OE is version 6.00.2800.1123. You posted with X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1506 Are you posting from one of the problem PCs? Also, take a look in OE at Help, About Outlook Express. It will show the version numbers of that various OE and related DLL files. Compare that list the files in that article. I've copied them for your convenience. Thanks for the reply.
I'm using Windows 2000 Server SP4 Yes, I was posting from one of the problematic PC's. I got the version # from the Help/About in OE I compared my files' versions with the ones you've listed. I have the same versions, or what appears to be newer. Here are the discrepancies: Yours: 6.0.2800.1441 Inetcomm.dll Mine: 6.00.2800.1506 (newer) Yours: 6.0.2800.1123 Msident.dll Mine: 6.00.2800.1106 ( <<< older) Yours: 6.0.2800.1437 Msoe.dll Mine: 6.00.2800.1506 (newer) Yours: 6.0.2800.1450 Wab32.dll Mine: 6.00.2800.1478 (newer) Yours: 6.0.2800.1123 Wabimp.dll Mine: 6.0.2800.1478 (newer) Any suggestions where to go from here? See this KB article:
A dialog box with no text appears if you reply to a news message in Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (You may ignore the title) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555398 Also see this post of mine in a recent newsgroup discussion: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...7f3b0ed2?hl=en For a reason yet to be determined, Windows Update was offering OE updates in the wrong order to Win2k SP4 and WinXP SP1 users. They straightened it out c. 14 Aug-05. Here's the fix: 1. Uninstall 'Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB897715' via Add/Remove Programs and reboot. 2a. Assuming MSOE.DLL is now v6.00.2800.1409 or earlier (i.e., v6.00.2800.1123 or v6.00.2800.1106), install (KB)823353 manually using the file downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 2b. Optional: Reboot and install KB887797 via http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-a1a3da675baf 3. Reboot and (re)install (KB)897715 manually using the file downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-28502b3d2518 Alternatively, after #1 above, check in at Windows Update and install whatever OE Cumulative Update is now offered and reboot. Then return to Windows Update to see if another one's now offered you. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Scott A.
