I have Outlook 6 and when opening my mail reader it will state that 10 new
e-mails have been downloaded, but when opened only a few are there. A few of my friends have sent me stuff but I haven't gotten them. They have not gotten a return notice of non-deliverable. I did just switch to a new provider so I can have DSL, so I am not sure if this is a problem. I use PC Doctor for anti-spy and Norton's for my virus protection. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike |

Assuming your new ISP gave you all the correct settings, there are many
other things to check, or do. 1: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages is checked. 2: Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. Make sure Leave a copy of messages on the server is not checked. 3: Do you have a lot of mail in OE default folders, especially the Inbox? Not good. Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. 4: Disable e-mail scanning in your Norton A/V program. See: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...921552806?Open You are still protected: http://snipurl.com/bmf6 Better yet, get rid of Norton all together. I'd like to recommend AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 or: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning when you see the option. Norton (and McAfee) products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them. 5: It could also be your anti-spy program, so see if disabling that makes a difference. This should keep you busy for awhile. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "shodobe" <shodobe@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:662928F8-6092-40CD-9034-05FEBA94B1F0@microsoft.com... >I have Outlook 6 and when opening my mail reader it will state that 10 new > e-mails have been downloaded, but when opened only a few are there. Thanks, Mike Besides what Bruce said (all suggestions I would have included) while in the Inbox click View | Current View and make sure Group Messages by Conversation is not checked. Check your Block Senders List and Message Rules. Any message they delete will still be counted. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup. Some ISPs protect customers using Norton to scan incoming mail so just turning off the copy of Norton on the machine may not eliminate your point as a potential cause of the problem. -- Regards. "I use PC Doctor for anti-spy". Are you sure about this? My research pointed
me to a Registry Cleaner! What anti-spam software, if any, are you using. These can be problematic. You should not place 100% reliance on their accuracy! -- Hope this helps. Turning off virus scanning on the local machine will cure a host of problems. An ISP using Norton for server side scanning, however, will not have a negative impact on the operation of the local machine. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

Much more is made of problems caused by scanning incoming mail than is justified by the number of messages that get waylaid. The odds are more heavily in favour of the cause being an OE user related problem or the loss being down to an anti-spam programme. I have some difficulty understanding your degree of confidence when you say "will not" with regard to ISP scanning. I may be a sceptic but how can you say that about even the best ISP's activities. -- Regards. Gerry ~~~~ FCA Stourport, England Enquire, plan and execute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "N. People should check that the ISP does not in fact delete spam and insist that they turn that off and find another ISP if they won't. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup. I agree with what you say but the more accurate the identification of spam by the system will inevitably result in a less careful scrutiny by the user for false identification of spam.
