Default outlook express - attachments come as wordpad

I am totally flummoxed - so if you respond to this, pleae be very basic.
I use Windows98, and Norton virus/internet protection.

Attachments sent to me (from various people) open as wordpad regardless of
whether I save them or open directly. If I open the same attachment from an
internet mail service, they open correctly (ie not in wordpad).

I believe I am up-to-date in all downloads etc.

ALSO - If I must uninstall and reinstall IE, to fix this problem, I need to
know whether the messages I currently have in my inbox and files will
disappear. I do not want that to happen.

Save the attachment to your hard-drive > Shift+Right-click on the save file
> Open with > Choose application you want to be the default and also check

the "Always open with..." box.

thanks for showing me how to change the application, but I don't know what to
change them to (how do I make the default "how they sent it to me originally"?
Does that make sense? the attachments are listed in my docs as .eml

Ah...!

Choose 'Outlook Express' (msimn.exe) for EML and EMAIL attachments, S&P.
(Then ask all your AOL friends to stop sending multiple Forwards, too.
