Default Auto-complete in Address field NOT FUNCTIONAL

OS: XP Office Pro 2

I just got a new laptop w/ the above OS loaded on it. OE 6xSP2 is great, but
I am having the same problem I read from others about the "shared contacts"
and the "Main identity" contacts - so I am just continuing to drag them over.
OK - that's a work-around. FINE....

But this one is driving me banana's: Whenever I go to "compose" a message,
and I type a name in the "To" field, OE6 behaves as I am accustomed, it
auto-completes the name as it always has in the past . (I imported my address
book that was saved on another system)

But then when I hit "send" - I get an error box - which reveals that the
"To" field has the name, but not the corresponding email address attached to
it - requiring me to OPEN up the address book, and select the name from the
list and "add" it into the "TO" field, EVERY time I want to COMPOSE an email
message.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Oh yeah - also happens when FORWARDING. But the Reply works fine.

Question: HOW can this be FIXED, SOLVED, or - like above - "worked- around"

I have never had any email program but OE and Outlook (corporate exchange
server from employer) but I want to look into some alternatives because this
is just FRUSTRATING me every day , every message.

THANK YOU MUCHO - sorry for venting.
And thus, you have my very FIRST post on the
MS-Support-Community-Forum-thingy.

Hi Stacy,

A couple of questions.

Is the problem present with an entry added manually?
What file (type) did you use for importing the entries?

If the entries (in the address book) are exported as a comma-separated
values (*.csv) file with first name, last name, (display) name and e-mail
address selected does the (*.csv) file look like the example below (when
viewed in Notepad)?

---------------------------------------------------------------
First Name,Last Name,Name,E-mail Address

Tim,Kauppila,aka Kuay Tim,kuaytim@myxisp.net

Tim,Kauppila,,kuaytim@myxisp.net

---------------------------------------------------------------

Note that the second entry does not have a value for (display) name where
there are two commas.

Hi Tim -

Answers:
1) Yes, the problem exists, even when a "new" contact is added to the
address book manually and then that contact's "display name" is typed in the
"to" field, OE6, auto-completes it, the name is not underlined, the error box
("no matches found") comes up, then I must select it out of the address book.

2) I can not recall how/what file type I used to import my contacts. I
believe it was a .csv file. I am almost sure it had to have been because I
have no knowledge of any other type of file for importing.

3) Ok - this is interesting. I have 83 entries - "contacts" in my address
book in OE6.
25 of those appear as they should selecting the fields you specified and
viewed in notepad:
Stacy, Masiero, Stacy Masiero, stacymasiero@emailaddress.com. The remainder
of them are the reverse of the second scenario you outline below: , ,
Stacy Masiero, stacymasiero@emailaddress.com.

So, most of them are missing the First and last name and carry only the
display name. So, I picked these up obviously from emails I have received and
then replied to from selecting that box on "add replied to contacts to the
address book" or something to that effect. Regardless, this problem did not
occur w/ OE6 on my last laptop loaded w/ Win 2000 Office Pro. So, is it that
I have Outlook 2003 SP1 Office Pro installed on the same laptop and it is my
default browser or what?

IS there a work around? Because - regardless to the examples above -
manually entering a name in the first, last, (display) name field, it still
doesn't address the message !

Thanks Tim

Hi Stacy,

The issue might be caused by Outlook being the default mail app. My
experience with this issue is limited, but others should be able to help. I
would not want to mislead with fruitless exercises! Please check back for
their replies.
