Is there any way to move over a *single* database file containing one
newsgroup store from OE 6 on one user's installation to another user's installation? Is there a standard procedure for this, or if not is there a third party utility that can do this kind of fine-grained movement of information? -- Will |

No, since newsgroups are "keyed" to a specific identity on each computer and
the info is contained in both the newsgroup.named.DBX file and also in the identities folders.DBX file. The only way would be to create a newsgroup on the second computer and only download a few messages into it. Then take the other DBX file from the message store folder on the first computer and overwrite the newly created one in the second computer. It's easier if you first "clone" the second computer to match the settings on the first computer. To read about cloning, see the info at this link: http://www.insideoe.com/backup/bu_full.htm -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. What is the name of the identities folder?
If I take the DBX file from the older computer to the new one, I don't understand how is this going to patch up the reference to it in the Identities DBX file? -- Will "Jim Pickering" <jim.pickering@gmail.com> wrote in message news:evo7QNzDGHA.3984@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... > No, since newsgroups are "keyed" to a specific identity on each computer and > the info is contained in both the newsgroup.named.DBX file and also in the > identities folders.DBX file. > > The only way would be to create a newsgroup on the second computer and only > download a few messages into it. This thread is different than the other one I posted. This thread is about
moving single newsgroups from one user account to the another. The other thread was about finding a more flexible way to configure the number of headers that are downloaded for each newsgroup. I'm not sure why you thought they were even similar questions? -- Will "Vanguard" <vanguard.code@comcastNIX.net> wrote in message news:O%23qd0FzDGHA.1816@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl... > "Will" <DELETE_westes@earthbroadcast.com> wrote in message > news ZidnbW44euz8yXenZ2dnUVZ_tqdnZ2d@giganews.com ...> > Is there any way to move over a *single* database file containing one > > newsgroup store from OE 6 on one user's installation to another user's > > installation? What is the registry location for the GUID information?
What is the physical location on the file system for the identities DBX file you referred to earlier? -- Will "Jim Pickering" <jim.pickering@gmail.com> wrote in message news:OrD%233G0DGHA.3856@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... > "Will" <DELETE_westes@earthbroadcast.com> wrote in message > news:HJOdnTnBTfky5CXeRVn-jA@giganews.com... > > What is the name of the identities folder? > > Depends on how many identities are created on the computer. Yep, my mistake. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670/en-us might help. I keep my message store on a different drive (along with all my other data so a fresh install of the OS doesn't wipe my data). All I have to do in OE is to change where is my message store: Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> Store Folder. I will lose the account definitions unless I previously exported them (Tools -> Accounts -> pick an account and click Export) so I can import them in the new install of OE under the fresh install of Windows. |

Okay, that is really helpful thanks. The account I need to export is on Windows 2000 which no longer boots correctly on this machine. Is there a way for me to export that account by pointing to something on a file system rather than by being logged in as the user? -- Will |

You will find the GUIDs for identities created at this key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{big, long number for each GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 To locate your message store folder containing all the DBX files, open Outlook Express, click Tools/Options/Maintenance and then click Store Folder button. Highlight the path (if not already highlighted) by using the Tab key to move about the page, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard. Open Notepad and use Ctrl+V to paste it in. Or with Outlook Express closed, open Windows Explorer and insert the path into the Address Bar (Ctrl+V again) and Explorer will open the folder containing the DBX files. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped.
