Default I've found the problem!

For me, at least! Symantic appear to have adjusted the settings on their
personal firewall. If I turn it off, my emails work. I'll have to contact
them to sort it out.

Many thanks everybody for your concern and help. Thanks, also for the tip
about Noadware - I shall be following that one up.
