With no action on my part, outlook express has started going through a
lengthy "Clean up and Compaction" routine whenever I shut down the computer or exit OE. This is a major pain. How may I shut off this "feature" and why did it start? Thanks much Paul Anton |

Ever since Windows XP Service Pack 2, Outlook Express will perform an automatic compaction after every hundredth use. There is a registry entry that you could change its value but then you would have to keep editing this registry entry to keep the automatic compaction from eventually occurring. Just choose to compact yourself on occasion (this does not reset the automatic compaction counter) so on the 100th time the compaction won't take so long because there isn't that much to remove and reindex in the database. http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/files/maintain.htm -- __________________________________________________ _____ ** Post replies to the newsgroup. It will compact every 100th time you've opened/closed the problem. This
count is maintained in the registry and while it can be adjusted there, it really should not be changed. It sounds like it was about to compact earlier and you click the Do Not show me this message again box, which means that now it will compact w/o warning. You can reset the flag for that in the registry under this key which contains a list of all dialogs you have dismissed for Outlook Express: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{651FEF03-F5AD-49E8-8735-3B1E6475A8FE}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Dont Show Dialogs The value in the right hand pane (which should be reset to 0 is "Compact Do Not ask Again" But even without that dialog, you will see compacting start, and once started, it should not be interrupted, nor should you power down or use Task Manager to dismiss the process since doing so will put you at considerable risk of losing at least part, if not all, of your stored messages. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE
functioning well and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. With SP2, automatic background compacting was removed due to problems it caused. Now you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which you should do. See this for more information: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact To keep things running smooth, and for faster compacting: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. And this is a very good option: Steve Cochran has added a button in his new version of OE Tool that will not only Compact All Folders, but at the same time, resets the "Compact Check Count" to zero whenever you compact manually. You will see the prompt again if you do not compact before 100 closings. http://www.oehelp.com/OETool/ It is still advised to check Work Offline before you compact. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Tri-Pacer" <nospam@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:fqqdnb-FAIeJ-iXeRVn-jw@comcast.com... > With no action on my part, outlook express has started going through a > lengthy "Clean up and Compaction" routine whenever I shut down the > computer or exit OE. > > This is a major pain. > > How may I shut off this "feature" and why did it start? > > Thanks much > > Paul Anton > |

Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting here! Please note the partner managed newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals. Our goal is to provide a one business day response to all posts. Thank you for everyone's experience sharing. Paul, before we go any further, I would like to confirm whether you encounter the following message when you try to close Outlook Express: "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes." If it is this case, I would like to let you know that this is a new feature introduced in Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 2 and this behavior is controlled by a registry key. After 100 times opening/closing Outlook Express, this dialog may prompt and we need to compact our email and news message folder. I would explain that like most database programs, Outlook Express does not actually remove an item from a *.dbx file when you delete a message. Instead it merely tags the item for removal at a later time, mainly when you next compact your folders. Until then, the deleted message is still occupying disk space, which can cause Outlook Express to perform more slowly when accessing the *.dbx file. If you want to get rid of this behavior, you can use the following steps to modify the corresponding registry key: 1. Click Start -> Run 2. Type regedit and click OK 3. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{identity GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 4. Right click it and click Export to back it up. 5. In the right pane, double click "Compact Check Count" and set its value to 0. In this way, the dialog will disappear until the count of opening/closing Outlook Express approaches 100 again. At the same time, I would suggest that you backup Outlook Express data periodically in case there is any data loss, for example, before you compact the database. The detailed information is documented in the following Microsoft KB article: 270670 OLEXP: How to Back Up and Recover Outlook Express Data http://support.microsoft.com/?id=270670 I hope the information above is helpful. If anything in my post is unclear, feel free to let me know. Have a good day! When you delete a message from a folder, it gets moved from that folder to the deleted items folder, but the space in the original file remains the same. The delete message is no longer in the folder. When you Shift-Delete an item, the message is marked for deletion (and 4 bytes of every 512 byte piece is overwritten), but the message then remains in the original folder, so the space is still there again. When you delete from the deleted items folder, then the messages again are marked for deletion, but they are still in the folder. As you indicated, when the folder is compacted then that space is reclaimed, and OE will then function more efficiently. Unfortunately, the implementation in SP2 was less than optimal, and as such, we are seeing multiple post from people who are losing all or some of their messages due to this problem. I developed a workaround with OETool, that will reset the counter when a user manually compacts. So others may also wish to check out the latter part of www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2 and also www.oehelp.com/OETool/ It would be nice if you could turn your message into a KB article we could reference for the users. cheers, steve > If you want to get rid of this behavior, you can use the following steps > to > modify the corresponding registry key: > > 1.
