Did all that. Found that an update (823559: Security Update for Microsoft
Windows) was available and installed it - or so I thought! After rebooting I
went back and the same update was still available. Checked OE and my problem
is still there.
Thanks for your patience - Giovanni.

Your headers (Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1409) now tell me that OE6
running on the Win98 machine is now fully up-to-date at Windows Update.

Are you telling me that when you go to Windows Update, 823559 is offered to
you?

Default Re: background sound - ie6 and w98se

[Giovanni, this entire conversation assumes you're running an
English-language version of Win98. If you're not, don't proceed as follows
but post back to this thread telling us what language version you're
running.]

OK, I see the problem now. From your headers:

Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1409
Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1441

The above are versions of the files MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL [the former
version belongs to 837009 (Apr-04) while the latter belongs to 823353
(Jul-04)]. How they ended up that way isn't important. Getting it fixed is
(and doing so will hopefully fix your WAV problem).

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline). Start >
Run > IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you use,

Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, install 837009
using the file you downloaded earlier (if you still have it), the same way
you installed it earlier.

Reboot and, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in
at Windows Update. You'll probably be offered a few updates but none of
them should be for OE. If Windows Update offers you 823353, do /not/
install it.

Let us know how you make out.

Yes, I am running an English version, and I appreciate your patience.
I will try your procedure as soon as I get to my home computer and I
will let you know.
Cheers, Giovanni.

I don't know how those things happened but you helped me fix my problem, PA
Bear. Thanks to others, as well.
Happy New Year and God Bless. - Giovanni
