Default background sound - ie6 and w98se

I am following the correct procedure, as I have done before, but I am unable
to install Background Sound in my outgoing e-mails. Something must have
changed...
Can you help, please? Happy New Year - Giovanni

Create Mail | Format | Background | Sound. Browse to the location. Note
that OE only accepts .wav & midi files without third party help.

Thank you Bruce and Steve for answering my plea. All that you suggest checks
out and I have done, but no wav file gets loaded. Anything I should be
looking for? Thanks again.

If you did what Steve said with no luck, you may have a damaged identity.
File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is
well, you can import your messages from the old identity and delete it.

I have also tried this and still no success. The wav file can be played
separately and all else seems ok. Any other suggestions?

From your message header: Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express
6.00.2800.1106, It would seem that you have not been to Windows Updates in a
long time. Download all available updates, (with your anti-virus off),
reboot and try.

Some other things to do:

Clear the Temporary Internet Files. In IE>Tools>Internet Options>
Delete Files button. And check the box to Delete Offline content.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar). File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

Run a Defrag.

Updates have been done regularly (please, see below), however they are not
accounted for. I can finish an update and go back and do it again. It does
not recognize that the update has already been done. May be it hasn't. Is
this pointing to the problem source?

All your other suggestions I do regularly, except the compaction which I
will try right away.
Thanks, Giovanni

Win98 or WinME, we'll assume.

Clear History, delete Cookies and delete TIF via IE: Tools > Options >
General, then...

1. Download the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB837009; all OSS) from the following link, saving it to your
Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

[ Optional: 2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep
pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe
Mode > Enter.)

3. Rename the downloaded file to KB837009.EXE and copy it to C:\ (the root
directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) C:\KB837009.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot [into Windows] and check in at Windows Update to see if any OE
updates are offered you, then post back.

I think you had best find out what your problem with your updates are. Once
that is fixed, it may well solve this problem.
