Whenever I open or close any IE windows, about:blank appears in the address
bar and slows my computer and it takes longer to view websites. Another
browser I have can block about:blank, but is there a way to do this for IE?

Check for spyware.

Also check your URL HTTP Protocol. See www.oehelp.com/ielnk.aspx
