I cannot receive or send email from my OE 6 account after an automatic
update made to my computer by Norton Security 2005. Norton's customer service is pathetic and their fix did not work. Any suggestions? |

Start by turning off e-mail scanning. You will still be protected.
Do you get an error message? Post it in its entirety if you do. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Nancy Thomas" <thomasnr@comcast.net> wrote in message news:%23nEtD08DGHA.412@TK2MSFTNGP15.phx.gbl... >I cannot receive or send email from my OE 6 account after an automatic >update made to my computer by Norton Security 2005. Please start your own post and explain your problem. This one has nothing to
do with a firewall or password. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Jen" <jenleigh@cebridge.net> wrote in message news:%23GWdB2%23DGHA.2628@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... >I am having the same problem!!!! Dave, in the Symantec newsgroup found a solution for him...
http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05083015103436 "About halfway down the page there's a section titled "To restore the default General and Trojan horse firewall rules " . It involves downloading a file that resets your rules". I've tried turning off the email scanning, but this does not fix the
problem. The error messages I get are: "Your POP3 (or sometimes it says "SMTP") server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you like to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond?" Changing the time to 5 minutes doesn't fix the problem either. I then get this error message: "Outlook Express: A time out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: mail.comcast.net. Server: mail.(or sometimes it says "smtp") comcast.net. Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure (SSL): no, Error Number: 0x800CCC19." I've also opened a new account under a different name, but I still cannot send or receive email with that account either. The strange thing is that I can send email to this newsgroup and receive replies, but not regular email. Also my address book entries have disappeared from my original email account. I have contacted Comcast, Microsoft, and Norton for help, but nothing has worked yet. I was trouble free for over a year until Norton Security 2005 automatic update in November. Help would be appreciated. "Bruce Hagen" <Nospam@mymail.invalid> wrote in message news:%23sZaW48DGHA.3004@TK2MSFTNGP15.phx.gbl... > Start by turning off e-mail scanning. Help would be appreciated. Sounds like you have to go to the Properties of the account (Tools | Accounts) and reset the server names. Posts to newsgroups are not email and use different servers. Addresses are not stored by account, but by OE Identity. If you created a new OE Identity did you set up the accounts correctly in the new identity and import the messages and addresses from the old identity? -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup. The strange thing is that I > can send email to this newsgroup and receive replies, but not regular email. You don't send email to a newsgroup; you post messages via NNTP. What command are you using to do this? (E.g. Ctrl-m (Send-Receive) or Ctrl-Shift-M (Synchronize All).) I can't remember details for the other cases and don't want to experiment now but for Synchronize All what I do is set my POP3 timeout to the minimum (e.g. 30 seconds) and then if I get a timeout message I can press Stop in it, which allows any of the other operations queued up to proceed. This problem symptom doesn't occur sufficiently often for me to have tried to analyse it further. All I know is that there is no point in trying to use the Wait button. E.g., I have also tried using telnet to try simulating the same connection both while the timeout dialog is present and while waiting for a second one. The telnet simulation always works but the broken request from OE stays broken. I doubt that it is simply an OE problem though. Except for the annoying lack of an effective retry after recognition that this situation has occurred, it looks more like an OS or network or server problem to me. HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |
