Dunno, not that bright, but you can test for case
make a message rule to delete if body includes zzzzz and send yourself a
message just containing Zzzzz, and see if it deletes

Not according to your reply to Miller where you said the string was:

<B class=3Dsans> Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003</B>

That means it is an HTML formatted e-mail. The <B>...</B> is HTML code.
The rules have problems searching inside HTML formatted e-mails. What
happens when you send yourself a test e-mail that is ONLY in plain-text
(i.e., absolutely no HTML)?

Is the mail against which you attempt to exercise the rule in the Inbox?
Rules only get [automatically] exercised against items in the Inbox.

Did the e-mail come through an IMAP or HTTP account (on which rules don't
work as noted at the top of the Rules list)?

For e-mail, remove "NIX" and append "#VC811" to Subject.

Rules are automatically applied while checking messages on the server or
downloading messages from the server.

It has been awhile since I played with an IMAP account. Don't you have to
define a *separate* set of rules for the IMAP account? If I am recalling
correctly, rules defined for POP3 accounts don't get exercised for mails
retrieved from an IMAP server. Also, rules do not work for HTTPmail
accounts. The OP has yet to mention from what type of mail server he is
retrieving his mails.

Whether deleting locally or remotely (delete from server), the mail (which
may only be the headers) still have to be downloaded and go into the Inbox
for the rules to interrogate them to then commit their action. So mail
still has to go to the Inbox before the rules get *automatically* exercised
against them. While the user may select a different folder on which to
*manually* exercise a rule to test it, *automatic* exercise of rules applies
only against items in the Inbox.

However, the OP said that manual exercise of the rule did not work, either.
That is why I suggested the OP send himself a purely text-only message to
see if the rule can then detect the string in the body of that test mail.
