Default Problems With Outlook Express

Hi All
My computer recently developed a strange problem with outlook express. When
I try to send/receive e-mails, it connects to the server,
'mail.btinternet.com' - it then hangs and doesn't do anything until it
produces a message 'no response from server - wait however long or stop?
Which ever option I try, it still doesn't do anything. Now, I am posting
this message via same outlook express and news.btinternet.com and I use
exactly same mail account/server/security and everything else as I do on my
other machine, but it's just not working to download e-mails on this
machine. To make matters worse, every time I try this and want to shut my
machine, ccApp.exe (a part of wonderful Norton Security) hangs and makes me
have to power down.
Any suggestions?

There is nothing wonderful about Norton, and may be your problem. Turn off
e-mail scanning and see if that fixes it. E-mail scanning is a redundant
layer of protection that creates havoc with OE. Your anti-virus will still
protect you.

If this does not fix your problem, post back and include the error message
in its entirety.

Thanks for your reply - I was being sarcastic. I have tried disabling Norton
but to no effect, the problem still persists. The error is: 'your pop3server
has not responded in somany seconds (its a timeout figure that can easily be
changed) Would you like to wait for the server to respond, or stop?'

That is hardly the entire error message. No error numbers? You should be
able to click on the error message and copy/paste the text.

Don't disable Norton. Just turn off e-mail scanning.

Also, go to Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers and make sure the
settings haven't changed to Localhost or 127.0.0.1.

Might also recommend uninstalling Norton completely, which is just not an
easy task anymore. Might want to see this info for help:

Removing Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier by using the Rnav2003.exe removal
utility when Add/Remove programs fails:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01092114452606

Uninstalling Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall using the
RnisUPG.exe removal utility:

Thanks for the tip, there really is no error numbers, that is the entire
message. No, settings have not changed, server is still mail.btinternet.com,
which it should be, this is what BT advised plus it works on my other
machine.

When Norton is set to scan email it changes the OE server settings to its
proxy. Disabling Norton doesn't reset them but turning off email scanning
should fix that. Even then you may have to reset them yourself.
