Default dvix problem

I am unable to play any video requiring divx codec. Whenever I install
the codec and then try to play a divx video, windows media player locks
up. I'm using WMP 9 with 98SE. I recently reformatted and reinstalled
my oeprating system, and everything worked before that, so it seems
that I might be missing something, but I have no idea what. Can anybody
help?

You almost certainly need to install the most recent divx
codecs. I'm using WiMP 10 and WinXP and found it necessary
to do some reinstalling today myself.

you don't understand. The problem comes up when I DO install the latest
codecs straight from the divx website. Before I do that install, WMP 9
plays a divx avi sound only. Afterwards, it just locks up, as does
every other player I try it with, including realplayer 10 and the divx
player.
