As an update, I uninstalled WMP 10 and went back to WMP 9, but that didn't
make any difference, the options were (are) still greyed out.

Very, very annoying.

I also reported this problem on XPforum
(http://www.xpforum.co.uk/forum/index.php) and got a reply there which fixed
my problem. It might help with others having the same difficulties.
