Default Distorted sound - DVDs and CDs

Whatever I play through Windows Media - radio, CDs, DVDs -all sound as though
the artiste has been inhaling helium! The speed of the DVD is not affected,
just the voices. I am a complete novice - can anyone help please?

What sound card are you using? Is there an update available for the driver
for it?
