When I upgraded from WMP9 to WMP10, the "download codecs automatically"
checkbox in the tools/options/player page is greyed out. Uninstalling
and returning to WMP9, the checkbox remained greyed out, as it did
after re-installing wmp10.

Any suggestions on how to get automatic download of codecs turned back
on? Thanks!

That can be turned out either by system policy or if you're not an admin.
If you're an admin on the system, it's probably turned off via System
Policy - you can edit/view that in the Group Policy Editor - gpedit.msc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at the gpedit msc, and the
Administrative Template/Windows component/Windows Media/Playback was
"not configured". Reading the details, the check-box should only
appear when the setting is "not configured", both "enabled" and
"disabled" cause the box to be grayed out. When I selected
"disabled", a check-mark appeared in the greyed-out box, so i suppose
it will now download codecs.

But i could not get the box to work in the "usual" mode, where the user
can select/unselect download behaviour from tools/properties.
