I would recommend uninstalling the currently installed player, then

That's not good and even viable advice. =) You do NOT need to uninstall Windows Media Player ever in order to install the new version. I write the installer, and I would hate for anybody to need to do that. So please don't tell people they need to - it's actually very counter-productive to a good install if you attempt to uninstall first. =) -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
