This problem started out of the blue last week, since (to my knowledge)
nothing new has been installed or reconfigured on my computer in months. The problem affects all media that is being streamed by the player. Files saved to the local hard drive play just fine. If a video or audio file is embedded in Internet Explorer, I will get a generic Windows crash pop up for IE. If the file is external, clicking the link will bring up Media Player, it will take a couple seconds to 'connect,' then a I will get a generic Windows crash pop up for Media Player. I'm using Media Player 9 on Windows 2000. I've tried reinstalling, uninstalling patches and updates, completely reverting back to the original system version (that does work), and just about everything else. I've removed any codec packs on my computer, and I've also uninstalled Quicktime and Real Player to make sure. There are no other programs designated for media filetypes, so there isn't a sharing conflict. I've seen a couple of other posts describing this exact problem, either with no replies, or the solutions haven't worked for me (I don't have the codec packs on my computer that the other users had which proved to be the culprit). I cannot figure out how to fix this and I can't find any other resource with fixes that work. Anyone have a guess? |

Do you get the chance to send a crash report to MS? -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. I don't see anything labelled "Crash Bucket," but here is the info:
When WMP loads externally from IE and crashes, I get one error record: Event Type: Error Event Source: Microsoft Windows Media Player Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 11/22/2005 Time: 2:04:33 PM User: N/A Computer: JEREMEY Description: The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Windows Media Player ) cannot be found. Did you send up the crash report? I see the crash bucket in our internal tool, but there's no info with it - just that it's a crash in wininet. So there's nothing really to go on there. Everything else about IE is perfectly normal. I'm not having (and haven't
had for a long time) crash issues with anything on my computer, so it's not like I have an unstable system or anything. I've been thinking about what might've caused this, and I think it startd up about the time that the automatic Windows Update in Win2k had some Media Player updates. I think it was around this time that everything started crashing, but as I mentioned earlier, uninstalling the patches don't remedy the issue. Thanks for your time with this though, it is a bit of a mystery problem. "zachd [ms]" wrote: > > Did you send up the crash report? I had a brief power outage today and when I booted my computer up, the media
player problem completely vanished. Go figure. I just hope that it doesn't return the next time I boot up... Thanks for all of your help with this though, I greatly appreciated it. - Jeremey Poparad "Poparad" wrote: > Everything else about IE is perfectly normal.
