I have seen many, many posts on this subject where the problem seemed to be
missing or corrupt codecs. this is not my problem, however. i have simple avi files that always worked but now wmp insists there is missing codec. most of the files were made using MRLE codec which doesn't need to be decompressed. i installed and ran g-spot and mediainfo; codec was found however rendering failed. i rolled back wmp from ver 10 to 9; i even tried ver 6.4 .... no luck - same error. the avi's run fine in quicktime and divx which confirmed the problem is not with the files but rather with wmp. any help or insight in how to fix problem would be greatly appreciated. thanks much, jc |

Well, MRLE actually does require decoding (David wrote this yearssssss ago), it's just a much more special codec than others. I believe it's the only codec available in Win16 or something bizarre like that... ? I'm assuming these files are on your local system? According to regedit, MRLE is decoded by msrle32.dll on your system. Is that file still around... ? -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
