Default Please Help - Seem to have deleted something vital!

I was having lots of trouble with my laptop and ended up in Add/Remove Window
components. Somehow I seem to have deleted my access to Media Player (and
internet explorer). I have tried to reinstall it but it says i am missing
auupdate.exe and won't let me continue. Media player is still on the
computer because if I go into my computer I can open it in there - there is
just no link to it in my programs, or on the desktop.
I would really appreciate some help. Thank you, Claire

Oh it should be pretty easy to fix though, if it still works : I think
in any case those programs are protected by the OS from total
deletion.

If you open windows explorer (not IE !), find the "Program Files"
folder - usually it's on the C drive at the top of the list. You might
see if it's XP "these files are hidden from view" or similar - click
the link to show the program files.

Media player would be installed in the folder "windows media player"
and IE in the "Internet explorer" folder.

Go into each folder, then for IE, find the blue "IEXPLORE.EXE" icon.
Right click it, and select "Create Shortcut" from the popup menu. You
can then drag the shortcut from windows explorer onto your desktop or
start menu as desired.

The same applies to create a media player shortcut - but you want the
wmplayer.exe icon and create a shortcut from that.

HTH
Cheers - Neil
