Media player will only operate in mini mode. I cannot get back to default

I see Windows Media Player in the taskbar, but nothing else. I cannot
maximize or restore or do anything else. I am writing this for my husband, who did something to it when his laptop locked up on him. I think it is partially deleted, but I cannot uninstall it completely or get it to operate correctly by downloading media player again.
