I have precisely the same issue; Autoplay is on, autoplay even uses Windows
Media PLayer 10. Windows XP Pro. Since nobody's answered this in months, does it mean WMP is just plain broken? AutoPlay and AutoInsertNotification are different. http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#autoplay covers this and how to fix it. -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. Good tip, but Auto Notification IS on - "1" and Auto Play is set for WMP. I
should mention I see the same behavior when playing or ripping. And the Shell Hardware Detection service? This isn't something you can change or tweak in WMP... it can just react to what the system tells it has happened with the CD drive. -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
