Default Video in WMP washed out.

I've used both DV AVI files straight from a camera, and WMV v9 files.
They all look washed out in WMP compared to other programs, like
Procoder for example. Why is this happening? There are, however,
clips that I've seen that do not exhibit this problem:

http://www.gamespot.com/live/stream_asx.html?
speed=700&path=warhammermoc_ot_pc_100505.asx&playa ll=0&push=0&prestre
am=&first=1133282187

(copy whole link w/o line breaks)

Notice how it starts from complete black. I can't get that to happen
w/ my NTSC source footage. Fades to black come out as fades to grey,
contrast is less, and color saturation is less.

What's the dealio? I read somewhere that the older video codecs do not
show this, but 9 does. I might try 7 later, but would rather stick w/
9.

Any input on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you turn off VMR in WMP's Tools:Options:Performance, does that cause the
videos to show up non-washed out... ?

I'll be damned. That works great!!! It does look much better, and my
blacks fade to black, almost matching the video boarder exactly.

Now, how do I force this to happen on the receiving end of my streaming
video? Can I?

Like I mentioned earlier, that gamespot vid above could show complete
black w/o me having to manually turn of VMR. How can I ensure my
videos look good on the receiving end w/o making the viewer do anything
special?

Thanks.

Furthermore, what is VMR?

Can I force it off in an ASF file?

No, and you probably don't need to. I'm presuming that this is just a
glitchy video card driver on your system that is providing bad VMR support.

It's a BFG 6600GT OC 128 w/ possibly the newest drivers. Plus I see
this same thing on other computers.
