Default How do I control which codecs to use in Windows Media Players?

Hello.

I have a dilemma. I have multiple DVD players (e.g., WinDVD, PowerDVD,
Sonic DVD decoder for my HDTV tuner software, etc.). In Windows Media
Player v6.4 and v9.0 (Windows XP Pro. SP2 with all updates), it seems to
be using the wrong codec because the playback doesn't work (no codec),
slow, choppy, or whatever. It seems like they're using the codecs.

How can I control which codecs should be used in these players? Is there
a tool out there that handles this?

Thank you in advance.

There is the decoder checkup utility into Microsoft website, however you are
strongly advised to keep only one codec if you can...

Yeah, that is what I am trying to control that.

Is this the one and the latest version?

I messed with it last night. It seems like Media Players still try to
download codecs even though I force them to use specific MPEG-2 decoder
(Sonic, Cyberlink, Intervideo, etc.).

What codecs are being used according to graphedt.exe? What filters are
being loaded if you check WMP's process?

If there's bogus registration floating around in the DShow space, I'd
believe that you'd get a random download. If you want to turn off an MPEG2
decoder, you pretty much want to unregister that decoder and then make sure
you reregister the other decoder, since they do tend to stomp on each other
in my experience.

Where can I get graphedt.exe? I am not having any luck with Google.

It should be part of the DirectX and/or Platform SDK. I believe Sherlock
Codec Detective and that sort of thing generally emulate its functionality.

I searched my HDDs for this file since I already had DirectX 9.0c
installed. Nothing! I downloaded and installed DirectX 9.0c SDK
(directx_9c_oct05sdk_redist.exe; 10/13/2005) and still nothing.

Am I doing this wrong?

Not the SDK redist, but the actual SDK-

Hence why an alternative/lighter weight program such as Sherlock is a little
more attractive, and why doing something like this is kind of a headache.
