Default How do I get text into my movies?

I downloaded a film in Italian with a separate text file, unfortunately in
polish, but it worked well when I put on the button for showing text in the
WMP. Then I got the same txt-dokument in english but I cannot get it to work
again, not even with the polish version.
How can I link this two documents together so the text appears in the film
while watching. I have seen it work but cannot get back to it. Grateful for
advice on this matter.

System is XP, WMP 10
Files are DivX for video and txt for text

Use a movie tool (and newsgroup) like Windows Movie Maker. You can't
edit any movies (or photos or music) with WMP.

You're talking about captions and subtitles. Do any of the
instructions at http://www.captionkit.com/switchoncaptions.php help ?

I'd be surprised if it really *was* a plain-text file. They're usually
SAM, vobsub or subripper or some similar text format, but end in .srt
or .sub or .smi (for SAMI captions).

Can you post a small 10-line snippet of the file here and I'll try to
identify the format ?

Thank you for very valuable advice, the issue is in fact about subtitles
which I did not know the right word for previosly. In fact I have managed to
solve the issue with the help from this link:
http://www.divxmovies.com/subtitles/

After downloading the program I just changed the file extension to .sub and
now it is working fine.
