I cannot play streaming audio files (.asx/.asf) with WMP10 in IE6 with
WinXP Pro sp2. When doubleclicking a link to a streaming audio file eg "http://www.rthk.org.hk/asx/rthk/news/summary/20051211/20051211_23.asx" WMP10 dose not start to play instead a dialog with Save/Cancel comes up. After saving the file to the HD WMP10 opens and plays the file when i doublclick the saved file. This happens to both .asx/.asf filetypes. Actually WMP10 is associated with the filetype .asx/.asf in the registry. I want to play these streaming audio files without downloading and saving to my HD, please help, thank you!! -- ************************************************** ************************************************** **** Stephen Lo Vancouver, BC., CA. |

Hi Stephen,
Close the Media Player, if it's running. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types, and then scroll down to the ASF extension, select it, click on the Advanced button (at the bottom of the window), uncheck (that is, NO checkmark) the box next to the words "Confirm open after download", and then click OK. Do the same for the extension ASX. (Remember to click OK). Now close Folder Options by clicking OK yet again. You may have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. (Note: I would caution you not to make any other changes in the various options/dialogue boxes of the File Types tab). The download notification dialogue should no longer appear for these file types, but rather WMP will directly open and begin playing your link. See http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;177976 especially taking note of the section on that page entitled "More Infomation". This would be less effective than going to WMP's Tools:Options:File Types and associating there, I would think. The shell File Types dialog does not affect the browser associations that are in question here. =) -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
