Default Media Player 10 & AVI Files

Hi,

I'm trying to play an avi file with Media Player 10, but when it plays it
tries to download the codec, errors, and I get an error saying "Windows
Media Player cannot play the file". I know the avi file works, as I've
opened it on our windows 2003 server, and it plays fine, I'm using WinXP
SP2. Looking at the versions the player on 2003 server is 10.00.00.3700,
mine was 10.00.00.36xx but I just upgraded to 10.00.00.3802 which is the
latest available from MS downloads.
I've run ethereal while trying to play the file, and see it gets an error
from the MS codec download site. Could it be the site is down? The 2003
server seems to be able to contact it ok!

Default Re: Media Player 10 & AVI Files

Hi Marco,

Just downloaded and installed the free divx player with the codec, but it
still won't play. Also I havn't installed any additional codecs on the 2003
server, and that plays the avi files with out problem.

Cheers

Ben

Default Re: Media Player 10 & AVI Files

The best thing is to download gspot (www.headbands.com/gspot IIRC) and to
check which codec is needed...

Default Re: Media Player 10 & AVI Files

Ah great thanks! Downloaded it, and found it requires the VMnc.dll (VMware
codec), google VMWare.com and found they do a standalone VMWare codec (link
below) which can be installed without having to install full blown VMWare.
It also says this codec is installed along with the full install, which is
probably why media player on the server could play the file!
http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/...coder_v55.html
It's a bit of a pain that VM doesn't encode the avi with a standard encoder,
the whole reason I wanted to create the AVI was so I could record
presentations and sent them out!
Oh well..

Thanks for your help Marco, much obliged!
