sound is muffled and distorted

When playing in Windows Media Player the sound is distroted and muffled. The
sound is fine when the machine boots. It was happening in Media Player 9, so
I upgraded to 10 and it is still happening.

Any assistance would be wonderful.

Under WMP's Tools:Optionsevices:Speakers, do you have the right output
selected?
Do you have WMP's Equalizer turned on? Is sound better if it's turned off?
