I couldn't really make sense of your communication... *tries to read it
again*

That part where you "deleted manually all the directories where WMP stores
the files" is so incredibly bad that I can't really start to want to deal
with your system. Don't ever do that.

I don't know what codecs you manually registered. That statement doesn't
make any sense, really.

If WMP is closing on file open, I'm presuming it's quietly crashing on some
driver issue(?) and that perhaps running dxdiag.exe might be a good thing
for you to try.

If you want actual support, try actual support-

Well, can be. Maybe the meaning of some sentences is clear only to me
because I know what I did. Sorry for that.

I know, it is not nice to delete directories because maybe win gets
confused but have reinstalled WMP many times and, at the end, have
tried also this option. Do not remember exactly what have deleted (it
was many days ago) but for sure have deleted the c:\Programmi\Windows
Media Player (Programmi is the 'Program Files' in the italian XP)

I have googled a lot before sending this message because usually i'm
able to solve all the problems by myself (are now more than 20 years
that i use the pc and never had the need of a technician) and in some
places suggested to register again some codecs manually using the
command REGSVR32. This is what i have done (i'm no so crazy to create
manually all the entries in the registry)

I think the same. The problem is how to find the driver involved and
how to fix the issue. My doubt is that something in the registry has
been deleted by one of the utilities used to clean the registry.

already done. No problems found, all tests passed.

OK, i will try.
Tks for the help.
merry xmas
