We had the same problem. In our case, it turned out to be nothing to do with
WMP. We ended up fixing it through the Master Volume control (double click the speaker icon in the System Tray ... you can also get to it through Control Panel). There are about 15 different volume sliders here. One of them is called '3D Depth'. We checked the 'Mute' checkbox and the vocals came back. Dunno what '3D Depth' means, but seems we're better off without it!
