Windows Media Player 10 stopped working on one machine for users. This
PC is set up for two users besides Administrator. WMP works perfectly only for Administrator. An error message stating "Internal System Error" pops up. It is not possible to ascertain when this started to happen as WMP is rarely used on this PC. The error was found by accident when the users wanted to check out a DV-AVI file. File permissions and user privileges were checked, and SFC /scannow, CHKDSK /F, Adaware, SpyBot were run to discount any malware and system file problems. None were found. WMP 10 was also reinstalled without any change. No system or software changes have been made on this Windows XP Professional (SP2) PC except for MS updates. However, it is recalled that WMP worked perfectly earlier. Any insight on what to look for would be greatly appreciated. Regards and thanks in advance. Avatar |

Is an error code included? If the latter, try http://www.opentechsupport.net/forum...c/27451-1.html Have any codec packs been downloaded? |

Reading your letter I think it says "internal application error" - as much as I remember what I learned from one user earlier today. I would have to wait till tomorrow to find out after I get to the PC. The link you provided is indeed very informative. I shall certainly try out re-registering the relevant JS and VBS dlls, and will post the results back by tomorrow morning (in about 8 hours from now). No codec packs were downloaded, at least not recently, AFAIK. The only codecs installed are the DivX 6, XVid, 3Vix, OGG - and that was several months back, while assembling and setting up the PC. Regards and thanks again. Avatar |

Hi Mike,
Thanks very much for the informative link. I was just not able to get WMP to work after re-registering the dlls! What was done instead was restore the system from a two-month old archived Acronis disk image (after offloading current documents and files, first!). This was on the assumption that the error was not existent then. That worked - and an up-to-date image was created again after installing all available MS and other software updates. Whoever neglected to discard the old outdated system image provided the unlikely solution! Regards and thanks again.
