i have the same problem with an H320. it is recognized using the data port,
but you can only use windows explorer for that. using the media port, it
will pop up asking if you want to sync. when you say that is what you want
to do, WMP opens, and will not recoginze the device.

help!!!

Did you buy your device from outside the USA? In that case the firmware
does not support WMP synchronization - something that neither iRiver nor
Microsoft advertise. You are better off using alternate synch software
with iRiver devices - see the Red Chair Software site, or mysticriver.net

iRivers are sold as either UMS devices, or MTP devices. I think most
of the U.S. models are MTP, but not sure. UMS players will show up as
a drive (maybe "removable") in Windows Explorer. I don't know how you
sync them in WMP. You can always copy the MP3s directly onto them, but
you'll have to create your own playlists and copy the playlists on too,
I think. MTP players (like my iRiver H10) should show up as Portable
(?) Media Devices. You can't copy directly to them, but you should be
able to sync them with WMP.

First thing, make sure you have the latest version of WMP installed,
and all the patches. I had some trouble getting WMP to recognize my
H10 too ... some magical combination of patch installs and PC reboots
did the trick. I think installing this WMP patch may have been the fix
that did it (watch out for URL wrap, I'm too lazy to visit
www.tinyurl.com right now):

Make sure your iRiver has the latest firmware, too. See
