Default Media Player 10 will not install / work correctly

When installing media player 10 it is trying to find the file: qasf.dll but
cant

Does anyone know what this is and why i cant find it on my system?

I cancel the window and the install finishes but then i get a message saying
media player 10 could not be installed.

However it still gets loaded onto the PC and i can play CD's through it
fine, but i cant rip any CD's, when trying i get: 'windows media player
encountered an unknown problem'

I have Windows XP sp2

Thanks for any help.

qasf.dll MUST be in c:\windows\system32 if your system is going to work
right. Is it there?

Then your system's messed up, which shouldn't come as a surprise. If it's
not anywhere on your disk...

Do you have WinZIP installed?

This isn't ideal, but if qasf isn't *anywhere* on your system, this will get
you limping along:
Download the WMP10 install package (mp10setup.exe) if you don't already have
it.
Right-click on it and choose Open With Winzip.
Drag out the qasf.dll file and copy it to your system32 directory.

That should get qasf relatively back to normal...

Hi

I have tried what you suggested and the following happened:

I opened the WMP10 installation file with WinZip and could see the qasf.dll
file in the list

I only got the option to extract the file from WinZip there was no Copy or
Cut options. When I tried extracting the file it finishes the extraction with
no errors but the file has not been extracted to the location I selected, I
created a new folder as a test and extracted all the files in the list to the
new folder and it extracted everyone except qasf.dll.

I tried to drag and drop the file to a number of different folders including
system32 but got the 2 following errors:

Error copying file or folder
Cannot copy file: Cannot read from the source file or disk

Then

WinZip
Could not find C:\Documents and Settings\Ken\Local
Settings\Temp\wz309f\qasf.dll

Thanks for all you suggestions / help so far, do you have any other ideas?

Options:
* The package you downloaded is corrupt. Download a new version of
mp10setup.exe. This is not likely the source of the proble, but could be.
* You have "hide protected system files" turned on. You can turn that off
under Explorer's Tools:Folder Options:View.

You need to be able to extract that file out, really.
