Hi everyone. I am hoping that you can help me with my problem.
I recently upgraded the DRM version on my WMP 10 so that I could use videos from totalvid.com. It worked fine but after I listened to a movie on my headphones, the speakers (integrated) stopped working on my PC. The sound plays fine through the headphones but nothing through the speakers. Occasionally, they work again but 99% of the time they do not. I have had WMP 10 for quite some time with no issue (however, I always use Winamp vs WMP so I am not sure that I every used WMP 10). The sound also works when I link to my TV via a HP media cable. This effects everything - system sounds, CDs, mp3s, movies, ... I have upgraded the sound card driver through windows update, checked that nothing is on mute, checked for conflicts in device manager. My guess is that something happened when I upgraded the DRM but I can not figure it out - any ideas? I have searched the FAQs and Knowledge bases to no avail. I am running a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop with WMP 10.00.00.3802. I have 1.5 GB of RAM. I run up to date Norton Internet Security/Firewall and Spybot so doubt it is a virus issue. HELP! thx Brad |

Software updates are extremely unlikely to be related to your problem, which is hardware. Usually, plugging in headphones will cut out the speakers, because you wouldn't want to use both at once. So does it work if you leave the headphones unplugged ? If not I'd suspect some sound card option to send to speakers is on mute. Go to your volume control Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume control. If you choose Options -> Properties and make sure you're seeing adjust volume for playback, then you should see the various mixer sliders. On my machine at least, I can choose a global volume, as well as Wave volume, and under each slider is a mute button. Perhaps you have a separate slider for headphone and speaker volume there. Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I checked that - nothing is on
mute - either the master mute or any of the channels. Also - just to clarify, the speakers do not work when the headphones are unplugged. They always worked fine in the past until this problem started (off when headphones in, on when headphones out). Any other ideas? thx "Neil Smith [MVP Digital Media]" wrote: > On Fri, 30 Dec 2005 08:24:02 -0800, "Brad" > <Brad@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >Hi everyone. Perhaps the headphone switch-out (the small contact that shuts off the speakers when headphones are inserted) has become worn or bent. Can you use external speakers, plugged in to the line-out socket of your sound card (if you have one) ? Cheers - Neil |
