Hello,
I'm running Media Player 9 on Win98SE. When I try to play some .MP3 files I get this message.......... "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play." More information show......"0xC00D1199: Cannot play the file" Microsoft claims it has a fix for this exact problem here http://support.microsoft.com/KB/814129 I've downloaded/installed and restarted....no difference (The basic Media Player in Adaptec CD creator 4 will play these files but Media Player 9 has installed itself as the default although apparently less capable?) Any ideas very gratefully appreciated. Eljay |

Thanks ZachD
Unfortunately there's way too much info. on your link here for me to begin to wade through, understand or judge relevance with my limited knowledge. I don't think I should need to become a computer geek/boffin to use a Media Player. This shows up much that is wrong in the world of computing, all bells and whistles and no solid, reliable, simple interface with ordinary people. I've tried too many irrelevant fixes on other issues to have learnt that you can create new problems without ever solving the original ones. And you can make a life-hobby out of it. If anyone could help (in simple language) with this SPECIFIC problem I would really appreciate it. But for now I've made RealPlayer the default player. It plays these tracks without a problem. So why did WMP have to make a problem where there wasn't one? please accept my apologies Zachd.
I just did not register the top line of your post and went straight to the main text with the link. Really sorry. To answer your question ......... Yes the mplayer2.exe DOES PLAY the tracks (So will RealPlayer and the adaptec player) So why can't WMP 9 handle it...."progress"? WMP is failing on your system because Microsoft lets you configure and tweak everything. This is good because you can do all sorts of interesting things that way, but bad because sometimes people or applications configure WMP wrong. And then they cast angry eyes at Media Player when it wasn't ever a Media Player problem to begin with.... That covers Why. Let's move on, because if you want Why that's not something I can help you until I know what actually went wrong. 'Why' is a boring tangential discussion. =) Under WMP's Tools:Options evices:Speakers, do you have the right outputselected? -Zach -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. Hi Zach, "Default DirectSound Device" is selected. But, can this be a speaker issue? As I said in my first post this is only when I play "some" Mp3 tracks. I get sound; except on SOME MP3s. Other MP3 tracks play fine as do WMAs. The Microsoft link appeared I posted originally http://support.microsoft.com/KB/814129 appeared to deal deal with this precise issue. Somethinmg to do with "headres" whatever they might be? Trouble is, it just didn't work! Thanks Again Elyay "zachd [ms]" wrote: > > WMP is failing on your system because Microsoft lets you configure and tweak > everything.
