The Microsoft web site says* at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...vice/0073.mspx

Why do I get the message, "This version of Windows Media Technologies is
incompatible with this version of Windows" when I try to install the Player?

There might be a problem with one or more of the system files on your
computer. Try running the System File Checker tool to scan and restore
missing or damaged system files, and then run Windows Media Player Setup
again.

To run System File Checker, do the following:

1.Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then click
Command Prompt.

2.In the Command Prompt window, type Sfc /scannow. For example:

C:\Documents and Settings\username>Sfc /scannow

For more information about the System File Checker tool, see article
310747, "Description of WindowsXP and Windows Server2003 System File
Checker (Sfc.exe)," in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

*(which can also be found by googling the error message text).
