I downloaded some tunes from the WalMart store yesterday, and tried to play
them. WMP says that I'm missing the "161 codec", and sends me to wmplugins. I've downloaded the files recommended (twice), but I still can't play my music. What gives? |

Codec 161 is the DivX Audio 4 codec - but there's *no way* I can think why WalMart are encoding in DivX instead of WMA : Maybe they had a head fit ! Anyway try this download and see if the error goes away : http://download.divxmovies.com/divx_audio_402.zip Cheers - Neil |

Actually, no - 161 (0x353) is WMA Standard and is NOT a DivX codec. DivX in their earlier days gained "credibility" (and I use that term loosely) by rebranding Microsoft work as their own, but 353/161 is definitively a Microsoft-defined bitstream, regardless of what text strings some "genius" hacker decided to mess with. *rolls eyes* =\ The package you're pointing to is just a hacked/rebranded version of a very old Microsoft codec, and is pretty retarded overall. I'm imagining that the problem is that the licensed WMA content being played back is finding an unsigned wmadmod.dll on the system. What version of wmadmod.dll is on the system? What version of wmvcore.dll is on the system? -Zach -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. Thanks for replying.
wmadmod.dll version 10.0.0.3646 wmvcore.dll version 10.0.0.4332 (and one in a "Backup" folder, version 10.0.0.3646) Mark "zachd [ms]" wrote: > > Actually, no - 161 (0x353) is WMA Standard and is NOT a DivX codec. Yeah, that probably represents the result of a reinstall over the top of your WMP install, which is why the 4332 package was rereleased with a 'blocking' 4332 wmploc.dll. This is part of the reinstall problem I've mentioned around here. *ponders* What version if wmvdmod.dll? Is there another copy of wmadmod.dll in your c:\windows\system32\dllcache folder? If so, what version is that? -- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time) See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
