Hello, everyone; and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I have been having a problem with my computer playing DVDs using Windows Media Player (WMP). The symptoms are as follows: 1 - When in windowed mode, the movie is visible, but it is surrounded by a colored background 'matting'. (The background used to be black.) 2 - I am unable to play the movies in fullscreen mode. The sound plays, but the video is completely blacked out. 3 - The DVD plays fine if windowed or fullscreen using the Cyberlink PowerDVD 5 software that came with my computer. 4 - The same colored background and lack of fullscreen visibility occurs if using other players, such as RealPlayer 10 or Quicktime. Things weren't always this way, but I'm not sure at what point it got screwed up. I used to be able to play the videos in WMP perfectly. I would prefer playing the movies using MediaPlayer, and I'm frustrated that I can't find a fix for this, especially the full-screen problem. Here are the technical details: - Dell Inspiron 9200 - Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A - Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600, Service Pack 2 build 2600 - Windows Media Player 10 (v. 10.00.00.3802) - Using Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder 5.0.0.1608 - (The same thing happens if I use WinXP Video Decoder Checkup Utility to change to use Sonic MPEG Video Decoder 2.5.4.1044) Any thoughts or suggestions? Warmest regards, ~Alessandro. |

It turned out that my nVidia video card drivers, at the time, had a known issue with video play-back. I found a "work-around" for this issue until a later version of the drivers fixed the problem. Check for updated video card drivers and/or motherboard chipset drivers. -- --- Y. |

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with the latest driver. That doesn't seem to be the problem. |
