When I play a WMV in WMP10, I no longer get any audio. Here's an example -
the WMV/HD sample file speed_1080.wmv. File/Properties shows the audio codec is "Windows Media Audio 9 Professional 384kbps, 48kHz, 5.1 channel 24 bit (A/V) 1-pas". I've rolled back to WMP9, reinstalled WMP10.00.00.3802, tried Windows Update, reinstalled my sound card drivers, updated directx, etc. If I play the file with mpay32.exe (v5.1), there is sound. I checked out zachd's mini-FAQ, but nothing helped me. I have no device conflicts, dxdiag says everything's OK, there are no error messages, WMP10's graphic equalizer at the bottom of the screen changes as if it is hearing the sound, but nothing comes out the speakers. WMP10 is not muted and my sound card's mixer is OK. If I load an MP3 into WMP10 it plays fine. Windows XP Pro SP2, Gateway 700XL P4 3.06GHz, 1GB RAM, Creative Audigy (SB0090). I've had this PC for nearly 3 years and this problem just started. Thanks- Sean |

A little more info- graphedit shows raw audio going to WMAudio Decoder DMO,
then to Default DirectSound Device. When I choose Graph/Play, I get sound just fine. Close out and reopen same file in WMP10, no sound. I opened the My Videos\Movie Maker Sample File.wmv in WMP10 and it plays sound. Properties show "Windows Media Audio 9 32kbps 32kHz Stereo (A/V) 2-pass CBR", versus the no-sound "Windows Media Audio 9 Professional 384kbps 48kHz 5.1 channel 24-bit (A/V) 1-pas". Graphedit shows the same graph as for the non-working wmvs. So what are graphedit and mplay32 doing differently than WMP10 so that I'm getting audio with them? WMP10 worked with Speed_1080.wmv a few days ago, and I haven't intentionally installed, uninstalled, or updated anything. |

Just for anyone else who may have the same problem I had, here's what I did
to resolve the issue. I had uninstalled my sound card in Windows and reinstalled the latest drivers before I posted here, and that did not fix the problem. This morning I uninstalled the card again, but this time I reinstalled using the original CD that came with my PC, and WMP10 now plays audio on WMVs. Now I'm in the process of updating the sound drivers to the latest versions. |
