Most likely coincidental... but to prove it... uninstall the security updates
and see if you can reproduce the problem. If it does not occur with the
updates uninstalled, then reinstall them.

It would also help if you can narrow down the problem to the /specific/ update
that appears to be causing this problem.

Also.. how old is the system? How old is the battery?

My System is 1 year old and so is the battery.

Its HP 5000 series laptop with 3 ghz processor speed 512MB ram and 60 GB
hard disk.

Generally after its charged upto 100% i either run it on AC power and when
working on it laters dont charge it back unless the battery is 40% remaining.

Routinely 'recharging' the battery at 40% may well account for it's sudden
death after 70% battery life usage, depending on the type of battery it is.

I would recommend fully discharging the battery, and then fully recharging it.

To fully discharge it, make sure /all/ applications are closed (including
those running from the notification area). Disable hibernation. Disconnect the
A/C power, and let the machine sit until it powers down.

Then, plug the A/C in and let it charge while the system is powered off. Refer
to your users guide for the notebook for the recommended full charging cycle,
but it's probably a few to several hours. "Overnight" would be a good charging
cycle.

Also, depending on the current load required by your notebook, it's entirely
possible that a 30% reserve in the battery is simply not enough 'juice' to
keep the notebook powered up. This would be particularly true with systems
that have 17" or widescreen displays running at higher resolutions, or
high-speed internal drives, or any external USB connected resources that do
not use external power.

But, also do the uninstall update test to verify that it's not being caused by
any updates that were installed. I don't think it is, and even less so now
that you've described your operating conditions, but it's not impossible that
something in an update has affected the battery monitoring utilities in your
notebook, so do be sure.

In addition to Lawrence's further comments, it's not unknown for a battery
to wear out after only one year, especially if you use the machine on
battery power most of the time. You can prolong the life of your battery by
removing it when running on AC power.

Some sources advise /storing/ the battery at ~40% power and then fully
charging it before using it again. It's also a very good idea to frequently
allow the battery to discharge almost completely and then fully charge it,
though this is more important for older, nickel hydride batteries.
