I just installed XP Home on a new hdd. I installed two drivers (one for
ethernet and one for SATA controller) and proceeded to do all the windows updates. I was doing fine until I reached KB828741 and KB828732. They both downloaded fine, and it acts like they were being installed but it says 'Failed.' Log says: *********************** 2005-11-12 18:18:44 936 3c4 Agent WARNING: WU client failed installing updates with error 0x80240016 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI >>-- RESUMED -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = WindowsUpdate] 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI - Install call failed 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI - Reboot required = No 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI - WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240FFF; Call error code = 0x80240016 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI --------- 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI -- END -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = WindowsUpdate] 2005-11-12 18:18:44 2016 7f8 COMAPI ------------- 2005-11-12 18:18:45 2016 7e4 COMAPI WARNING: Operation failed due to earlier error, hr=80240016 2005-11-12 18:18:49 936 3c4 Report REPORT EVENT: {EF18F9ED-2124-41ED-AB79-34320D911F9B} 2005-11-12 18:18:44-0600 1 182 101 {ABD1C3EF-987D-4A04-83DB-CEC22495D3B7} 102 80070643 WindowsUpdate Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741). *********************** Ive tried to do each individually with no success. I was able to get the KB828741 installed. Even though numerous attempts to
download it and install it manually have failed, i decided to try it in safe mode. Installing this file manually in safe mode worked. However, this process did not work for KB828732. When i attempt to install it manually i get Setup can not copy the file msgina.dll Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP Hotfix Source Files' in the drive you specify. It gives me the option to 'retry' 'cancel' and 'browse' |

Your previous correction was KB835732 so look at the TechNet article about this security update (aka MS04-011). Specifically look at the file manifest for your OS. Check current file versions in case the update has been partially applied. Tip: filever (e.g., from the Support Tools) is helpful when doing this. > When i attempt to install it manually i get > > Setup can not copy the file msgina.dll Check the status of that module extra carefully then. E.g. when I use tasklist to check mine (XPsp2) I can see that there is no way that this could be replaced except by renaming it during a reboot: tasklist /fi /"Modules eq msgina.dll" Check the permissions of that module using cacls msgina.dll Check with the log file to see if that renaming was being set up. Check the log file (and any other diagnostics) the install created in case there is something else blocking a successful install. > Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert > 'Windows XP Hotfix Source Files' in the drive you specify. > > It gives me the option to 'retry' 'cancel' and 'browse' Details? What was the location "below"? Did you try to find it elsewhere? Etc. Hint: you should be able to use File Find (e.g. Win-F) instead of poking around with Browse... HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |
