Hi all,
Is there any way to stop Windows Update from automatically rebooting my computer after an update? My PC does alot of data processing / code comiling, etc. overnight and the problem with this is it doesn't seem to care that I have programs running and I've lost hours of work with this well-thought-through "feature". If Microsoft really thinks it's that important to reboot, the least it could do is query running programs to see it they can close safely. I've turned off automatic updates for now and am hoping someone has a fix for this. Cheers Troy |

Simply configure Automatic Updates so that you need to approve the install.
That way, you can choose a convenient time to do so to avoid conflicts if rebooting is required. How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306525 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), AH-VSOP Troy wrote: > Hi all, > Is there any way to stop Windows Update from automatically rebooting my > computer after an update? > > My PC does alot of data processing / code comiling, etc. overnight and the > problem with this is it doesn't seem to care that I have programs running > and I've lost hours of work with this well-thought-through "feature". > > If Microsoft really thinks it's that important to reboot, the least it > could do is query running programs to see it they can close safely. > > I've turned off automatic updates for now and am hoping someone has a fix > for this. > > Cheers > > Troy |

Then turn off the "auto-install at 3am" configuration, and change the configuration to "Notify for installation". Then you can /choose/ when you install the updates. A reboot will still be /required/ following the installation. > If Microsoft really thinks it's that important to reboot, the least it could > do is query running programs to see it they can close safely. It's not /important/.. it is REQUIRED. As for "query running programs". The assumption -- and the RECOMMENDED practice -- is to CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS before installing updates. The installation of updates is predictable.. it occurs on Tuesday evening of the second week of each month, or during the next few days. More significantly -- it occurs at 3am (by default), but /you/ can change this to /any/ time of the day you want. You should mark your calendar if you intend to continue using automatic installation. > I've turned off automatic updates for now and am hoping someone has a fix > for this. Yeah... this is like not buckling your seat belt because it interferes with getting out of the car after you park it. Turn ON Automatic Updates, and spend a few minutes learning how to properly use it -- since it seems to be having such an impact on your use of the system. Sure would be unfortunate to have your system invaded due to an uninstalled security update because it was interfering with your "code compiling" or "data processing". btw.. I'm curious as to what kind of "code compiling" requires several hours of overnight system activity!? > Troy > |
