I have tried to install KB885492 repeatedly over the past week or so.
What finally worked was this: Using regedit, delete the following key from the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows Media Player\wm885492 Unregister the following file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wmp.dll as follows: regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wmp.dll Install the patch again from the Microsoft Website. I tried this initially using the manually downloaded patch and it did not work. Check the properties of wmp.dll to make sure that the version number matches the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows Media Player\wm885492\FileList\File1 == Version = 9.0.0.3250 This should take care of the problem.
