Default Updates - Does auto update preclude manual update?

I have auto update turned on.

An auto update installed an icon on my pc called "Microsoft update".
When I connect to the update site, the pc gets checked, then I'm instructed
to download a validation program which fails to install.

The auto updates succeed.

Does turning on auto updates mean that any manual updates that I try will of
necessity fail automatically?

To answer your question: No.

In what way (what are you doing exactly, what do you see, what error
messages do you get, etc) does your "manual attempt" actually fail?

Thanks for the reply Shehan,
When I connect to updates using this icon, the web site (not spoofed) checks
my system, then displays a choice of auto? or custom install.
It doesn't matter which I choose, the next screen is advice to install
Windows validation software. OK. Several seconds later a new screen says
"Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required"
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
Download and install now. OK
A popup then states "updates were unable to be successfully installed"
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130).
The next screen is "Review Your Installation results"
Failed Updates - .........KB892130
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
Check update history. by following this link.

And when I check, there are no failed updates, only the automatic successful
ones that appear to be up-to-date.

I cannot get out of the loop,.

I hope that is clear enough.

Time out of synch may be your problem, RodneyK.
Perhaps getting the day and hour set right will solve it.

Thanks Micheal.

Brilliant. The time was out of synch. My computer thought it was living on
the west coast of USA. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. SNAFU.
I tried manual update again. Same result. Any other suggestions?

Shenan Stanley has answered your subject question, "No."

I'm sorry that accurate time did not clear your path to WU.

Your Outlook Express 6 is not fully updated - its headers show that.
The missing update may be a non-critical one AU wouldn't bother with.
Would you like to get it? Select "Custom" at WU, then on the left click
Software, Optional in the Select by Type category. An update for OE
should be displayed as an Optional software update. Can you get it?

If you can't get it, post exactly what happens when you try. WU blocks
you where? Explain it again - make it really easy to understand.

Default Re: Updates - Does auto update preclude manual update?

Here you go Michael. Am I missing something which should be obvious?

OK. I pressed Custom, the window showed it was scanning to find suitable
updates, it finished and a window appeared that states

"Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required

To use Microsoft Update, you must first install the latest version of some
Windows components. This will allow your computer to work with these new
features on the site:

a.. More updates: Get updates for Windows and for popular Microsoft
programs such as Microsoft Office in one place.
b.. Faster updates: The latest Microsoft Systems Installer (MSI) improves
the way updates are installed, delivering updates in the smallest possible
packages in the shortest amount of time.
c.. Easier navigation: Now you can find updates by priority or by
product while helpful links and important messages help ensure you are
installing all high-priority updates for your computer"

A hyperlink titled "details" when clicked gives ;

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that
your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows
installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product
Activation status. After you install this item, you may have to restart your
computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

Total: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)

And there is a button called titled " download and install now"

(In my downloaded programs folder there are 4 files none of which is
KB892130. A search of my PC gives no results for KB892130.)

I press the button and the installation fails.

When the popup is exitted, the next window (url
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us) tells
me to review my Installation results, which show only the successful auto
updates. These are all security updates and go back to 16 October with the
most recent being 11/11/05.

OK, RodneyK, KB892130 is currently not available, so here's a link
on search for " Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool ":

http://support.microsoft.com/search/...ch=sup&x=6&y=9

The first link there says that you can use automatic updates with an
illegal copy of Windows, but you can't use Windows Update. The
second link explains how to adjust Internet Explorer to get updates.
The third link is about the time issue, the fourth link doesn't apply.

1 double-check time with http://nist.time.gov - click your zone.
2 adjust Internet Explorer to work better with WU per 2nd link.
3 maybe you've got pirated Windows - find out about that.
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Resources_Action.mspx

If not, either go for WU support (free) or be willing to talk about
your computer - what you've got and when you got it. For WU:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/...h=1&gprid=6527

You're welcome RodneyK.

Microsoft is aware that convincing Windows users that they are chumps
for not using OSX or the freebie isn't a sound business practice. I guess
that they're working on more elaborations to smooth out theft deterrence.
If the only way turns out to be elegant code, then they could write that.

I hope WU support tells you how to fix the glitch, I'm sorry I couldn't.

Michael
