I just reinstalled Windows XP Pro, and I did things in this order:
1) Installed Windows XP Pro with SP 2 included (on the CD). 2) Went to Tools/Windows Update from IE. 3) Selected to convert to Microsoft Update; installed the required ActiveX controls. 4) Installed all high-priority updates that were identified. 5) Installed Office 2000 Small Business Edition, which had SR1 included on the CD. 6) Went to Update.Microsoft.Com. Guess what? There were no new updates identified. This is wrong! 7) So I went to officeupdate.microsoft.com, where, just as I expected, it installed the Office update Active X control and then told me there were some required updates for Office (namely SP3 in the first round, and and some individual security updates in the second round). The Update.Microsoft.Com site in step 6 did not mention Office SP3. Why is the system broken in this scenario? Am I going to have to go to both sites now, or did installing the ActiveX control in step 7 make things so that update.microsoft.com will correctly find any new Office updates? I don't suppose there's any way for me to know if this is going to work unless, at some point in the future, I become aware that there are some Office updates that apply to Office 2000, and see what happens....... I thought all this was supposed to work right these days. David Walker |

Microsoft Updates does not support Office 2000. To get Office 2000 updates, you must go to Office Updates. |
