Microsoft Updates continuously asks to install update 816093 yet each and
every time I go to download the update I receive the message "This setup will only upgrade over an existing version of the Microsoft VM". What do I need to do to properly install this update, thereby avoiding this message? |

Hi,
this is by design. If you are running Windows XP without the Microsoft VM, you do not have to install updates to the Microsoft VM. I gather from your response that I am to ignore the update each and every
time I am requested to download it. If so, this is going to frustrate me....and others "Manuel" wrote: > Hi, > > this is by design. You may or may not have the Microsoft VM installed.
The Microsoft VM /was/ installed with Windows XP Service Pack 1 (NOT Service Pack 1a). You could also have the Microsoft VM if you upgraded to Windows XP from versions of Windows 98 or Windows 2000 that had the Microsoft VM installed. To determine if you have the Microsoft VM installed (and what version it is), run the JVIEW.EXE utility, which will return the version number of the Microsoft VM. If JVIEW is not installed, you do not have the Microsoft VM installed. If the revision number is <3810, then you do need this update. Unfortunately, the detection logic is broken for this update, and the WUA reports it is needed on many systems where it is not. To permanently ignore this update, select "Custom" updating from WU/MU and unselect the 816093 update. You'll be given an option to permanently hide this update. Choose that option if the update is not needed on your PC. For a complete description of this issue, see http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com/articles/004.htm "Why won't update 816093 install?" Thanks for the reply / help. I have done what you suggested and it
definitely has helped.
