Default sp 2

I am helping (at least I try) a friend of mine. He has windows xp
familial still at sp 1. We have tried twice to install sp 2 using
automatic update and after beginning of install the system freeze and
the only solution is power Off.
Any clue. No error msg but when we reboot the warning your sp2 did not
install, suppress it!!!
Thanks for any help

Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis log
to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill of
health.

Thanks PA Bear,
I ran Norton, succesfully, before trying to install, but I did not
check for spyware. I will.
As far as the different microsoft help, i've already checked some of
them.
Thank you for your advice
