I bought a Dell PC and been running for a couple years. Suddenly, the CD ROM
stopped working. When I click Add Hardware, the CD ROM has a yellow ! on it. If I click it, it says: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I have tried lots of trouble shooting (delete device, Windows Update, etc.) but nothing seems to work - I cannot find the driver. I emailed NEC and they replied: "ATAPI drives have not required drive specific drivers since Windows 95 came out. The operating system will provide the basic support for the drive to operate as a CD-ROM drive. The ability of the drive to play/read DVD disks will require a DVD decoding program, such as PowerDVD, WinDVD or SoftDVD. The ability of the drive to burn CD/DVD media will require a burning program, such as Nero or EZ CD Creator. However, as NEC does not sell to retail channels, our drives are sold as OEM products only. This means the drive is shipped with no mounting hardware or software of any kind. This means the OEM computer manufacturer, or any retailer that may happen to get these drives, would have to bundle some form of software with the drive. Since it is not required that they do this, if software was not bundled with the unit, you will need to obtain the software yourself. Note: The above listed programs are not being supplied as recommendations and are only provided as examples of the types of software you will need to utilize the drive's functions. Warranty services and technical support for the end users of NEC's OEM disk drives are the responsibility of the distributor, wholesaler or retailer from which the unit was purchased. Please return Defective Disk Drives to the point of purchase." Should I just junk the CD ROM and buy another? |

Hi patrick,
Although this is not the most appropriate newsgroup in which to post your question, as this newsgroup is dedicated to problems with Windows Update, give this a read before you end up junking your CDROM drive: CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314060 (please note that although the article references Easy CD Creator, there are other third-party software packages that will cause the same "problem" to occur). If you don't want to manually edit the registry, you can d/load and run the registry patch that is available here: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems (look at the second "problem") If the above doesn't rectify the problem, might I suggest that you post your question to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware newsgroup.
